This section of the West Coast highway runs right along the beach for a couple km, and if you’re traveling southwards, this is the first time the highway has hugged the shoreline since Punakaiki. For some reason travelers stop along this section of coastline every year to stack rocks into some peculiar balancey combinations. Who knows why?? Because it’s the final glimpse of the Tasman for southbound travelers? Because it’s the first glimpse for northbounders? Call it whimsy, joy, love……whatever it is, people stop and create traveler tributes to NZ every year. Always the same, but always different.

Where’s yours?

The rock sculptures were a let down but we didn't really know what to expect. On the other hand, seeing dolphins jumping out of the water just off shore was absolutely excellent! If you go here keep your eyes peeled, you never know, you might see some. ??

September 2013: we found ourselves coming down from the north and loved t location n stopped . we ran amok the gravelly beach, in distance dim trees hidden behind swirling mists. Classic west coast crystal clear creek w brown tinge entered the surf. a whole lot logs tumbled onto t sandy cove a few days before.
In t bushes we found hidden someone's fishing gear! But as we drove off, our car was full of sandflies.....arrgh ??
