After being told by the male
After being told by the male owner to "Follow me quietly" we did so in our camper to our spot on the hill where he told us EXACTLY how he wanted us to park. After telling him that we had an awning on the back of the van and didn`t want it facing into the wind he proceeded to actually grab my hand on the steering wheel and physically steer the van himself. After getting agitated with this and telling him to let go he went on about it being up to him how we parked and not caring at all what we wanted. When I told him we weren`t going to stay there and wanted our money back he grabbed me by the shirt through the van window until I opened the door on him to make him let go. When we went to the office to get a refund he refused to put the money back on the card, informing us there was a "$1 fee for using it" and wrote us a cheque for $1 less than we payed before informing me "it would probably bounce anyway"! We went next door to the chip shop to cash it and they told us that we weren`t the first people to have trouble at the site. After reading all the bad reviews when we got to the next camp site we really wished we had done so previously! I strongly urge you not to put money into their pockets.
Awesome time there beginning
Awesome time there beginning of Jan 2012. Owners helped us to stay away from young concert goers, even though we were there for the same concert. Treated well, smiles, helpful, all in a packed full camp. Definately will return on future visits to opo. Facilites were fine, a good atmosphere too.
We stayed at the camp over
We stayed at the camp over the xmas and new year period 2012. We have done a lot of camping in Northland, and Opononi Holiday Park is the WORST campground we have ever stayed at and we will NOT BE RETURNING!! The camp owners are rude and arrogant with very little people skills!! The ladies showers had no locks, no soap at all, paper towels and toilet paper would regularly run out and would not be refilled to the next day!! Surely a very big hygiene issue!! The power regularly overloaded so washing machines and driers would stop working, campers would put in extra money which got gobbled up and when we discussed this with the owners they were very disgruntled by the inconvience!! Then the top part of the camp had no water for three days!! The owner said that maybe a tent peg had gone through the pipe!! If that was the TRUTH, then FIX IT!! Opononi and the Omapere area is a beautiful spot but if you are travelling here, DON'T STAY HERE, BOOK A BACH!! We have just discovered for the same price as staying here we could have had a bach instead!! THUMBS DOWN TO OPONONI HOLIDAY PARK!!
Absolutely fantastic town
Absolutely fantastic town with lovely friendly people bar the management/owners of the opononi beach holiday park. On a busy night in the town featuring concert and fishing competition the campground was absolutely chaotic with management making people wait outside for upwards of half an hour while they tried to organise the campers etc exactly as they saw fit irregardless of the wishes of the campers, being told in no uncertain terms that vehicles could not come and go once sited in campground as this would make it muddy, we were forced to walk everywhere as they would not allow vehicles out! After one night of maddening nazi-like patrols by management on a noisy quad bike (which were ineffective and did nothing to stop the loud music, fighting and drinking till 3-4am) we were then charged for 2 nights accomodation although we booked in for only 1, and when asked to refund the fee for the 2nd night they silently pointed out a sign saying no refunds. As we had prebooked and paid by creditcard, albeit on the understanding we were going to stay 1 night and would pay the 2nd IF we decided to stay, there was little we could do. Thoroughly disgusted at this behaviour and the accompanying attitude. not a good way of getting return customers. And the said fee....$50 per night for a powered caravan site.
It seemed the chap on the quad was more interested in being helpful to the young female campers and laying down the law for the more peaceful campers, than actually sorting out some of the more serious issues as far as family campground goes. Will NOT be returning there!!
Good location, but the
Good location, but the shower/toilet block in desperate need of update. Paid $20 for 1 person on power. Based on visit March 2011.
