great scenery and all but don't Come here after xmas when you look for Isolation and loneliness. up to 3000 (!) kiwis celebrating New years eve here. its crouded.

We loved this campground - a wonderful feeling of isolation in a wilderness setting.The sandflies were a problem for us , due to the time of the year we think - mid February. There was a sense of camping alone as camp spots were well removed from one anther and separated by bush. This experience was enhanced by the knowledge that we were vicariously experiencing some Lord of the Rings events due to the location.

Nice spot in amongst the bush. Tight road coming in, but then it opens up into a narrow valley. plenty of camping spots, river and lake fishing, walks, popular location but its large enough to accommodate many many groups.
Sandflies were reported to be a problem, though we didnt encounter any. DoC style toilets. No cellphone access and a long drive to the shops so come well prepared.
