Treble Cone is Wanaka’s mountain-top ski resort. Like Queenstown’s Remarkables drive, you can drive up Treble Cone’s steep gravel access road simply as a sight-seer. In summertime you’ll probably see some paragliders floating down from Treble Cone’s heights. Unlike the Remarkables Rd that sports jaw-drop views from the get-go, you need to drive fairly far up Treble Cone before you can see over Rocky Mtn to Lake Wanaka. Truth-be-told, the top of Rocky Mtn has a much better view than Treble Cone, but for people not up for the rugged Rocky Mtn hike, then the Treble Cone drive is your ticket.

Directly in front of Treble Cone’s lower entrance gate is a pair of thousand-foot waterfalls spilling down the cliff face—quite a sight. The one on the left has a nice grotto at its base where the stream makes its final 25m leap into a shallow pool…yay! If you’re up for a shower at the base of a gargantuan waterfall, then park at Treble’s entrance gate, go left thru the tall fence gate, and then follow the stream bank for 12 minutes up to the sunny and private nook at the base of the lefthand waterfall.
