Seething earth, hissing fumaroles, and steaming cauldrons of death…all safely viewed from the 45-ish minute planked walkway that snakes through this primeval geothermal “newcomer.” Strangely, Craters of the Moon hasn’t been around long, at least in geologic age…and signs along the walkway will illuminate the fascinating history. Craters is a must-see, even if you’ve been to Rotorua’s best—the steaming clouds that wisp around and wrap you in their humid embrace are an experience not to miss!
This place was formerly a free attraction, but since DOC gave up its management on 6/6/06 (did the devil make them do it?), it now costs a nominal $5. It’s a fantastic stroll for the whole family, especially if you “accidentally” veer Off The Path enough to look down into a billowing crater—surely Gollum and the Hobbits will be mucking about on their way to Doom. Don’t dawdle though, hurry back to the path lest Sauron’s evil eye spots you and he sends the ring wraiths aaaiiiyyyyyy!!
