a bit old school but what a location. Like many, we've driven through Patea with a 'keep the wheels turning' attitude, but this time we pulled off to the Patea motor camp. It's slightly out of town, down towards the very small harbor. A flat and easy draining site with a small kitchen and heaps of power sites. The site is right besides the Patea river, great for a dip and there's even a outside shower to wash off the black sands. Also there is a half hour each way walk along the riverside back towards town. Well worth a stop off. Not cheap at $15 p/p p/n, but the internet (flaky) and showers are free
