technically much like any other top 10 park, only a bit worse. the highway is 2 meters away, the noise of trucks and other weirdos never stops. you pay extra for showers, laundry and other stuff. facilities old but clean and the staff is friendly. bottom line: had the most expensive night in NZ here (23 $ pp for non-powered, what a joke) and got the worst sleep so far back
2 adults, a 3 year old & a 6 berth campervan. We stayed here for 2 nights. Indeed the sound of the train will weak you up in the morning, not surprising when it is driving by our beth at only 20 mtr. The next doors heliport can make some noise too. Other then that a nice campground with good facilities. Mind you you have to share your grass and picnic table with your neighbours. Whale wachting tours are 5 min walk on the other side of the train track.
Very nice and expensive during our south Island trip the dearest. Some noise from the trains and out of the 65 or so camper van sites we were the only private one the rest were cab overs rentals. Very nice spa and toilets resonable shelter.
Nice, clean & modern facilities, friendly staff, lots of room, close to shops and town centre, beside SH1 so road noise in inevitable, train tracks on seaward boundary so some train noise at night but these negatives dont detract from the many positives of the park. Based on 2007 visit.
